How Did We Get Here?
The Cymru Radical Left Dialogue, the project which created this alliance, worked on key issues, and ran open workshops on them, that allowed anyone to shape the direction through open discussion and democracy.
The Workshops
These workshops formed the core of our political platform, and at the May 2025 Conference, ‘People, Planet, Peace Cymru’, these workshops were unanimously accepted as part of the formation of this – Cymru’n Codi.
What Is Cymru’n Codi?
Cymru’n Codi, which translates to Cymru Rising, finds it’s roots in the ‘Cymru Radical Left Dialogue’ (CRLD), which began in 2023. This was developed by members of Undod Cwaith Cymru / Left Unity Wales, who recognised a need to have greater development of socialist unity and thought in Cymru, relating to our specific conditions.
The CRLD organised two conferences, the first was on based on open discussion on key issues, such as how to organise in Cymru, the role of the community in the fight for socialism, and the threat of the far-right. Rather than listen to a series of lectures, the CRLD broke the conference out into small groups, who debated key issues, who’s findings were presented back to all participants.
The second conference is where ‘Cymru’n Codi’ was founded – the ‘People, Planet, Peace Conference’ in May 2025. Between this conference, and the first, a series of workshops took place which developed policy suggestions. These suggestions were brought forward to the ‘People, Planet, Peace Conference’, which voted on two motions – the first to ratify these policies and use them to form the basis of a new movement, and the second on how to organise this movement.
These two votes passed unanimously, and resulted in the formation of ‘Cymru’n Codi.
We recognise the need for a common platform, to tackle the threat of the far-right at the Senedd 2026 elections, and the dominance of anti-worker neoliberal economics. In the short term, we are focussing on the Senedd 2026 elections; to intervene through either standing candidates or supporting other candidates through agreement.
We will be forming local branches, whose membership will further develop the policy work, turn it into a political manifesto, which will then be placed before every single person or party standing at the 2026 national election.
These candidates will be asked to commit to the manifesto, and those who do commit, will have the support of our movement.
The May 10th 2025 ‘People, Planet, Peace’ Conference – Record
Below, you will see the exact text which was debated on, voted on and unanimously carried at the May 10th Conference, which gave us a democratic mandate to set out this new movement and it’s goals.
Motion 1
‘Formation of Cymru’n Codi’
This open meeting of the cross-party ‘Cymru Radical Left Dialogue’ notes and generally supports the analysis, demands and policies that have been discussed at this gathering and by CRLD’s the seven policy workshops since January. They set out and develop the political aims supported at the well-attended first meeting in October 2024 – ‘production for the needs of people, planet, peace and not profit’. Other policies need to be further considered in the same open and collective way.
This open meeting supports the establishment of a People, Planet, Peace Cymru movement to take the development of the demands and policies forward as a programme for direct action and social transformation.
We also agree to urgently start to:
- organise a new ecosocialist movement, open to all who agree with these principal policies of social transformation and national independence;
- support local, national and international campaigning on these issues;
- intervene by standing candidates and/or supporting others in agreement.
To facilitate this, it is further agreed to begin building supporter networks, where practical, based on the new Senedd constituencies.
Motion 2
‘The Way Forward’
From this meeting a Cyngor of volunteers is formed to cover the roles of secretary, chair, treasurer, information and include comrades from each of the 16 new Senedd constituencies. This temporary body is empowered to co-opt further members as appropriate.
The Cyngor will prepare an Autumn 2025 launch conference of a People Planet Peace Cymru movement with this remit.
- Start to enable and publicise individual membership and group affiliations of all who support the aims of a People Planet Peace Cymru movement, namely ‘production for the needs of people, planet, peace, not profit’. This will require the establishment of a bank account, and an affordable membership subscription.
- Establish methods of membership democracy and active involvement leading to the conference, including reports from Cyngor meetings and the setting up of Senedd constituency-based branches (in the first instance).
- Organise workshops and discussion papers to cover potential demands and policies that take the aims forward, for consideration by members and affiliates at the founding conference.
